**Paralimni Commemorates 1974 Fallen and Missing at Annual Memorial Service**
Paralimni, Cyprus – On Sunday, the town of Paralimni held a solemn memorial service to honor those who lost their lives during the 1974 coup and subsequent Turkish invasion. The event took place at the historic Saint George’s Church, where local officials, clergy, and community members gathered to pay their respects.
The service was presided over by Bishop Vasilios of Famagusta, who led the congregation in prayer for the fallen and the missing. Justice Minister Costas Fitiris represented the government at the ceremony, underscoring the national significance of the commemoration.
In a poignant memorial speech, Paralimni Mayor Giorgos Nikolettos reflected on the profound impact of the events of 1974, stating that the sacrifices made during that tumultuous period “do not only belong to the past” but serve as a vital legacy for future generations. He emphasized the enduring consequences of the coup and the invasion, which resulted in “dead, missing, refugees and a divided homeland.”
Mayor Nikolettos specifically honored the memory of 15 individuals from Paralimni who were either killed or are still missing as a result of the conflict. Among them was Major General Tasos Markou, who was recognized for his unwavering commitment to duty. The mayor also paid tribute to Tasos Isaak and Solomos Solomou, noting that their memories are integral to the ongoing struggle for freedom and the reunification of Cyprus.
Following the service, attendees laid wreaths at the Heroes’ Monument, a site dedicated to those who have sacrificed their lives for the country. Mayor Nikolettos reiterated the municipality's commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at determining the fate of missing persons and preserving the historical memory of the events that shaped Cyprus. He stated that “the sacrifice of the fallen” should continue to inspire and guide future generations.
The annual memorial service serves not only as a remembrance of the past but also as a call to action for the community to remain engaged in the pursuit of justice and reconciliation. As Paralimni reflects on its history, the town remains dedicated to honoring the legacy of those who have suffered and advocating for a united future.
