The department had given assurances it would put the work out to tender by June 2026. It missed that deadline, and the municipality has since been told the tender has slipped to the second half of the year, with no firm date, Andronikou said. The reason given was that some measurements still needed finishing. “That is not an excuse, this should already have been done,” Andronikou told Phileleftheros. The municipality considers the delay a long one and is worried by it, he said. The department is the contracting authority and needs to act now, he said, because the project has sat unbuilt for years. Andronikou said the work matters because it will upgrade the municipality’s seafront and Pervolia in particular. Contractors finished the first phase in 2017 and plans for the second were drawn up the following year. The scheme then had to be redesigned after it emerged that part of it had been wrongly placed inside the wave dissipation zone. The second phase covers a pedestrian and cycle path 1,300 metres long and six metres wide, along with public space for sport and recreation, rest areas, toilets with showers and changing rooms, and landscaping. It will link to the local road network through side accesses for pedestrians and cyclists, and will include parking for 92 vehicles. Construction work is expected to cost more than 1.5 million euros.
