**Rain Pounds Beijing as Typhoon Dolphin Sweeps Through China**
Beijing, China – The capital city of Beijing has been heavily impacted by Typhoon Dolphin, the strongest typhoon to hit China this year. The storm has unleashed torrential rains across wide areas of the country, leading to significant flooding, particularly in the capital where key roads were inundated and vehicles stranded.
On Wednesday, the Beijing authorities issued their second-highest rainstorm warning as the city experienced intense downpours that transformed multi-lane roadways into rivers. The heavy rainfall has prompted the suspension of 250 bus routes and the closure of 150 tourist attractions, while 10 subway lines operated at reduced speeds, according to the official Xinhua news agency.
The northern district of Changping recorded the highest hourly rainfall in Beijing, with 90.7 mm (3.6 inches) falling within just one hour after 9 a.m. The storm has already set new rainfall records in central and eastern provinces, including Zhejiang, Henan, and Hubei. In Wugang, a city known for housing one of China’s largest steel companies, a staggering 209.5 mm (8.2 inches) of rain fell in a single day, breaking previous records for August. Similarly, Xiangyang also experienced significant rainfall, receiving 169.1 mm (6.6 inches).
Despite having weakened after making landfall in the eastern province of Zhejiang on Sunday, Typhoon Dolphin continues to pose a threat as its remnants draw tropical moisture deep inland, raising concerns about potential flooding in other regions. In Yuhuan, a coastal city in Zhejiang, nearly 200 mm (8 inches) of rain caused streets to submerge, with footage showing scores of cars crowded on a bridge that remained above the rising waters.
This year's extreme weather events, including Typhoon Dolphin, are increasingly linked to climate change, with scientists noting that the emerging El Niño pattern is contributing to rising temperatures and more frequent, intense storms.
