The Permanent Criminal Court in Paphos heard the case behind closed doors yesterday, Thursday. The court is hearing the case without the public present, after accepting a related request from the prosecution. Those expected to testify in upcoming hearings include the complainant, and reports indicate a question may arise over the way she gives her testimony, which in such cases can be given in person in the courtroom, from behind a screen, from another office in the Paphos Courthouse, or via video link. About ten prosecution witnesses have testified so far, according to information, with 18 originally still to be heard. However, since both sides intend to agree on a number of admitted facts, the total number of witnesses ultimately called is estimated to be limited to around 20. Senior Counsel of the Republic Michaella Pasiardi is representing the prosecution until proceedings before the Permanent Criminal Court in Paphos conclude. Members of the investigating team have already testified as part of the evidentiary process. Following the presentation of exhibits, the summoning of witnesses continued this week, with the prosecution seeking to substantiate the charges the defendant faces. Individuals who gave sworn statements during the police investigation are expected to testify next. The suspended Paphos Mayor faces five charges: rape; indecent assault against a woman; indecent assault against a woman involving a separate act; assault causing actual bodily harm; and administering a drug or other substance capable of stupefying or overpowering a person’s resistance. He has stated he does not admit any of the charges, and the case remains ongoing before the court.
