**Plan for Irrigation Water Heads to Cabinet**
A revised proposal for the allocation of irrigation water is set to be presented to the cabinet on Wednesday by Agriculture Minister Christos Senekis. This proposal takes into account the current hydrological conditions and ongoing water infrastructure projects aimed at improving water management in Cyprus.
During his first appearance before the House agriculture committee on Tuesday, Senekis emphasized the importance of water availability for the development of the primary sector and for attracting younger generations to agriculture. He expressed concern over the aging demographic of professional farmers in Cyprus, noting that the average age currently stands at 63 years old.
Senekis outlined the ministry's priorities and plans, highlighting that the revised water allocation proposal is informed by the current hydrological year’s data and the status of various water management projects. He stated, "Water availability is the be-all and end-all for developing the primary sector."
In response to questions from committee members, Senekis revealed that the government plans to complete three additional desalination plants by 2031. These facilities are expected to enhance the water supply for agricultural purposes. He also mentioned that the Southern Conveyor Project would provide additional water resources specifically for potato and tree cultivation. While the volume of water supplied through these projects will be significant, Senekis clarified that it would not result in a surplus.
The minister acknowledged that the allocation of water resources is subject to change based on the hydrological situation and evolving agricultural needs. He indicated that the government would continuously monitor these factors and make necessary adjustments. "It is a dynamic process which is continuously monitored and, if another intervention is needed, it will of course be made," Senekis stated.
