**Police Arrest 17 in Nationwide Crime Prevention Operation**
In a significant overnight operation aimed at enhancing public safety, police across Cyprus arrested 17 individuals on Wednesday. The coordinated effort was part of a broader initiative to prevent serious crime and maintain public order in key urban areas.
The operation involved extensive patrols and checks, with police stopping and inspecting a total of 643 drivers and 184 passengers. Authorities reported that those arrested were suspected of various offences, including illegal stay, carrying a knife, unlawful possession of burglary tools, unlawful possession of property, public drunkenness, causing a disturbance, drug possession, possession of an offensive weapon, and assaulting a police officer.
In addition to the arrests, police conducted inspections at 37 premises, which resulted in four reports for various offences. Traffic enforcement was also a major focus during the operation, leading to 320 citations for road traffic violations. Speeding emerged as the most common infraction, with 133 drivers reported for exceeding the speed limit.
The police impounded nine vehicles as part of the traffic enforcement efforts. Officers also conducted 89 breathalyser tests, resulting in four reports for drink-driving. Two motorists tested positive in preliminary roadside drug tests and are currently under investigation for driving under the influence of narcotics.
The police have indicated that such operations will be ongoing, with plans for increased presence, targeted checks, and rapid operational responses to ensure public safety and order.
