**Police Seize Large Quantity of Duty-Free Tobacco Products in Nicosia**
Nicosia, Cyprus – In a significant operation targeting the illegal possession and sale of tobacco products, local police seized a total of 396 boxes of duty-free cigarettes and heated tobacco products in Engomi, Nicosia. The operation, which took place over two days, led to the arrest of a 40-year-old man suspected of transporting these products.
The police action was initiated following a tip-off regarding the unlawful possession, trafficking, and sale of duty-free tobacco products, as well as the fraudulent evasion of Value Added Tax (VAT). Officers stopped the suspect's vehicle on Wednesday and Thursday, leading to a thorough search that uncovered a substantial amount of contraband.
During the search, authorities found 301 boxes of heated cigarettes and 95 cartons of traditional cigarettes. In addition to the tobacco products, police also discovered €2,400 in cash and two mobile phones inside the vehicle. The presence of cash and mobile devices has raised questions about the extent of the suspect's operations and potential connections to larger trafficking networks.
Following the arrest, the man was taken to the customs department in Nicosia, where the seized tobacco products and the vehicle were handed over for further investigation. Customs officers subsequently issued an extrajudicial payment notice amounting to €20,000, which the suspect must pay for possessing tobacco products on which tax had not been paid.
Authorities have emphasized the importance of such operations in combating the illegal tobacco trade, which not only affects public health but also has significant financial implications due to lost tax revenue. The police and customs departments are expected to continue their efforts in monitoring and addressing illegal tobacco activities in the region.
This operation highlights the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in Cyprus as they work to mitigate the risks associated with the illicit tobacco market. The seizure of such a large quantity of duty-free products serves as a reminder of the need for vigilance and cooperation among various agencies to uphold the law and protect public interests.
As investigations continue, authorities are likely to pursue additional leads stemming from this case, potentially uncovering more individuals involved in the illegal tobacco trade. The incident also raises awareness among the public about the legal ramifications of engaging in the possession and sale of untaxed tobacco products.
