Mazonakis was taken by EKAB ambulance to Elpis hospital in Athens, where doctors pronounced him dead. According to initial information, he had been transferred to the hospital from a private medical practice in Kolonaki, where efforts had been made to keep him alive. An IV catheter had been inserted at the practice in an attempt to gain time and save him. Mazonakis was one of the most popular Greek singers of his generation. He was born in Nikaia in March 1972 and began his music career in 1992, aged 20.
