**Porn-Content Creator Initially Selected to Promote Warsaw Uprising Memory Faces Backlash**
An adult-content creator was briefly appointed as an ambassador for the commemoration of the 1944 Warsaw Uprising, but public outcry led to a swift reversal of the decision. The initiative, which marks the 82nd anniversary of the uprising, has the honorary patronage of the Polish Culture Ministry.
Monika Laskowska, known in Poland for her presence on the subscription-based platform OnlyFans, was featured in promotional materials by the Warszawa44 Association, wearing a T-shirt that commemorated the uprising. She was designated as an "Ambassador of Remembrance," according to various local media reports.
The Warsaw Uprising was a significant event in Polish history, initiated by the Polish resistance against Nazi German occupation on August 1, 1944. The uprising aimed to liberate Warsaw as Soviet troops advanced, but it was ultimately suppressed after 63 days, resulting in extensive destruction and a tragic loss of civilian life, with estimates of casualties ranging from 150,000 to 200,000.
The Warszawa44 Association stated that Laskowska was chosen for her substantial social media following and her expressed commitment to promoting the memory of the uprising. In addition to her adult-content career, Laskowska has been involved in the so-called “freak fights,” where influencers compete in combat events.
However, the decision to appoint her as an ambassador sparked considerable backlash on social media. Critics questioned the appropriateness of selecting an adult-content influencer to represent such a pivotal moment in Poland's history. Prominent Polish media personality Karolina Korwin-Piotrowska, whose father was a participant in the uprising, criticized the choice, suggesting that the organizers were prioritizing social media visibility over historical significance. She provocatively suggested that the campaign should consider recruiting even more controversial figures.
In light of the mounting criticism, Sebastian Meitz, an expert at the Sobieski Institute, publicly challenged Culture Minister Marta Cienkowska regarding the selection process, asking whether Laskowska's appointment fell under the categories of "culture" or "national heritage."
In response to the backlash, the Polish Culture Ministry quickly distanced itself from the decision, clarifying that the list of ambassadors had not been vetted by the Ministry. Although the project held the Ministry's honorary patronage, it emphasized that it did not provide any funding or organizational support for the initiative.
Dariusz Michalak, the president of the Warszawa44 Association, confirmed that the decision to appoint Laskowska was made internally. However, following the controversy, the association decided to suspend her role and removed her promotional image from their social media platforms.
This incident highlights the ongoing tension between modern social media culture and historical remembrance, particularly in a country with a complex and painful past. The Warsaw Uprising remains a deeply significant event in Poland, and the choice of representatives to honor such a legacy continues to provoke debate within the public sphere.
