**Report on Kyrenia Ferry Disaster Investigation Promised ‘As Soon As Possible’**
A preliminary report regarding the investigation into the recent sinking of a passenger ferry off the coast of Kyrenia is expected to be released “as soon as possible,” according to Turkish Cypriot ‘prime minister’ Unal Ustel. This announcement came following a meeting with Durali Isler, the head of Turkey’s transport ministry’s marine accident investigation department.
Ustel emphasized the commitment of the Turkish Cypriot authorities to uncover the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident, stating, “We have demonstrated a clear and firm resolve from day one.” He assured that all necessary measures would be taken to illuminate every aspect of the disaster.
The investigation will involve comprehensive technical examinations of the ferry and the events leading up to its sinking. Ustel noted, “All the findings will be meticulously evaluated,” underscoring the importance of thoroughness in the inquiry. He further asserted that no detail would be overlooked and that any negligence or liability would be addressed, regardless of its source.
“Our state’s resources have been mobilized to ensure that the investigation and technical examination processes are conducted thoroughly and effectively,” Ustel stated. He acknowledged the significant responsibility that the Turkish Cypriot authorities bear towards the victims and their families, promising to personally oversee the investigation process to ensure transparency and accountability.
The Turkish authorities, led by the transport ministry and under Ustel’s direction, will conduct the necessary examinations to determine the causes of the incident. Ustel reiterated his commitment to a comprehensive investigation, stating, “Every aspect of this incident will be investigated, and even the slightest negligence will be uncovered.”
The gravity of the situation was further highlighted by Ustel’s remarks on the emotional toll of the tragedy, as he expressed the immense grief felt by the community. “It is both the duty and the responsibility of our state to fully investigate this great tragedy… Our grief is immense today, but our state, with all its institutions, is fulfilling its duty,” he said.
In the wake of the accident, nine individuals, including the ferry’s captain, Mustafa Oz, and seven crew members, have been taken into custody. They are set to appear in court on Thursday as part of the ongoing investigation.
