**Republic of Cyprus Donates €380,000 to Committee on Missing Persons**
The Committee on Missing Persons (CMP) announced on Monday that it has received a significant donation of €380,000 from the Republic of Cyprus. This contribution marks an important addition to the total funding provided by the Republic since 2005, which now stands at €4,772,700. The CMP indicated that this financial support will enhance its operations for the current year and further its humanitarian mission to locate, identify, and return the remains of missing persons to their families.
The CMP has been active since 2006, focusing on the sensitive and critical task of addressing the plight of individuals who went missing during the intercommunal conflicts in Cyprus. The organization is tasked with locating and identifying a total of 2,002 missing persons. To date, the CMP has successfully exhumed 1,717 bodies and identified the remains of 1,069 individuals from the official list, in addition to identifying 217 others. Among those identified, 305 were Turkish Cypriots and 764 were Greek Cypriots.
The CMP's work is vital for many families who have endured prolonged uncertainty regarding the fate of their loved ones. The organization stated, “Through this work, the CMP helps bring answers to families who have endured decades of uncertainty regarding the fate of their loved ones.”
In the previous year, the CMP reported the discovery of the remains of 23 individuals, with 12 of those subsequently identified. This included eight Greek Cypriots and four Turkish Cypriots, reflecting the ongoing efforts of the CMP to provide closure to families affected by the historical conflicts.
In addition to the support from the Republic of Cyprus, the CMP also receives funding from various international organizations and nation states. Notably, the European Union contributed €2.6 million in January, and the United Kingdom provided a donation of £15,000 in March, underscoring the international community's commitment to the CMP's humanitarian objectives.
The CMP continues to rely on such donations to fulfill its mission, which is not only about locating and identifying missing persons but also about restoring dignity and providing answers to families who have been left in anguish for decades.
