**Restoration Work Begins at Ayios Demetrianos Church in Lapithos**
Restoration efforts have officially commenced at the church of Ayios Demetrianos, located in the village of Lapithos, as part of a nine-month conservation program aimed at preserving this historic site. The initiative, announced by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on Friday, is a collaborative effort funded by the European Union alongside contributions from the local community.
The project is set to enhance the structural integrity and aesthetic value of Ayios Demetrianos, which serves as a significant cultural landmark in the region. The UNDP will oversee the technical aspects of the restoration, ensuring that the work adheres to best practices in conservation.
Sotos Ktoris, co-chair of the Technical Committee for Cultural Heritage, shared insights through a social media post regarding the restoration. He highlighted that the work at Ayios Demetrianos is part of a broader initiative that includes ongoing restoration efforts at more than 70 cemeteries and religious sites across the area. This comprehensive approach underscores a commitment to preserving the rich cultural heritage of the region.
In addition to the work at Ayios Demetrianos, Ktoris confirmed that maintenance activities will also take place at the church of Ayios Charalambos in Agridaki, situated in the Kyrenia district. This simultaneous undertaking reflects a concerted effort to maintain and restore various sites of historical and cultural significance in the area.
Ayios Demetrianos holds particular historical importance, having been the main church in the village of Larnaka tis Lapithos. The site is notable not only for its religious significance but also for its archaeological value. A remarkable discovery was made in the vicinity, where a unique Greco-Phoenician inscription known as the Anat-Athena Bilingual was found, dating back to the 4th century BC. This inscription, carved into the rocks of the Kyrenia mountains, provides valuable insights into the cultural interactions of the time and enhances the historical narrative of the region.
The restoration of Ayios Demetrianos is expected to contribute to the preservation of the local heritage and promote cultural tourism in Lapithos.
