According to the announcement, the programme revisits films that challenged conventions, expanded the boundaries of cinematic expression, and left a lasting mark on the history of world cinema. The press release states that EXPLICIT explores the relationship between art, censorship, freedom of expression, and social change. It does so through the work of filmmakers now recognised as landmarks in international cinema. The organisers say the programme is not focused on provocation for its own sake, but on the artistic and historical significance of films that redefined the language of cinema and continue to influence filmmakers, audiences, and discussion today. The inaugural edition is dedicated to Lars von Trier, described in the announcement as one of the most influential and controversial directors of contemporary European cinema, through five of his most acclaimed works. According to the Rialto, the screenings will be followed by an open discussion with film professionals on themes of consent, violence, and artistic freedom. The event is organised in collaboration with the Limassol Cinema Club, and all screenings are for audiences aged 18 and over, due to the content of the films.
