The Kursk Region, which shares a border with Ukraine, has seen a marked increase in drone activity in recent days. Khinshtein highlighted that Russian forces had previously downed 168 UAVs over the same region in a 24-hour timeframe and 169 UAVs between September 20 and 21.
This uptick in drone assaults follows a larger Ukrainian drone operation that targeted Moscow and other Russian regions during the recent parliamentary elections. That operation, which occurred over the weekend, was described by Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin as “unprecedented.” Reports indicate that over 1,600 UAVs were intercepted during this assault, including 450 aimed at the vicinity of the Russian capital. The attack resulted in the deaths of three civilians and injuries to dozens more.
In the aftermath of the drone raids in Moscow, significant damage was reported. A drone strike on an apartment building led to the death of a 44-year-old woman and left her husband seriously injured, who later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. Their two children also suffered injuries in the incident. Additionally, an elderly man was killed when another drone struck his home. The attacks prompted the evacuation of approximately 400 residents, including 70 children, from a 21-story apartment block after debris ignited a fire on the roof.
The Russian government has accused Ukraine of intentionally targeting civilians with long-range drone strikes, asserting that these actions undermine diplomatic efforts for peace. President Vladimir Putin remarked last week that while the Ukrainian leadership publicly advocates for peace, their actions suggest a contrary intent, aimed at obstructing negotiations and prolonging the conflict.
