According to the municipality, its teams are carrying out systematic checks and targeted interventions exclusively in public spaces, including streams, manholes, storm-water drain grates, ditches and other points where standing water can collect. The municipality said particular attention is being paid to locations identified as potential mosquito breeding sites, among them the Parisinos area, the area near Dimitris Christofias Avenue, points along the Kalogyros River, the GSP Stadium, and other spots where conditions favourable to mosquito breeding may develop. Potential breeding sites have also been identified at some buildings under construction and in private swimming pools that are not properly maintained, the municipality said. In these cases, it said, responsibility for clearing the sites and taking the necessary measures lies with the property owners or managers. Sites falling under its own responsibility are monitored, the municipality said, with approved control measures applied where needed. These include the use of appropriate biological treatments, draining or pumping standing water, and removing or emptying containers that hold water. The municipality said it is also working with the relevant Health Ministry services and, if a human case of West Nile virus is identified, assists, within its remit, in taking the necessary measures in the affected area, informing residents and carrying out targeted interventions. Residents’ own contribution is equally important, the municipality said. To help limit mosquito breeding sites, it is asking them to keep wells, tanks and water containers in their yards sealed; repair or replace damaged manhole covers and tanks; remove old tyres, buckets and other objects that can hold water; check yards, gardens and balconies regularly, especially after rain, and remove any standing water immediately; and ensure swimming pools are maintained and operated according to proper procedures, so they don’t become breeding sites themselves. For further information and detailed guidance, the municipality said, residents can visit its website (www.strovolos.org) and consult its information leaflet on mosquito control measures, as well as its informational video on tackling Aedes mosquitoes in urban areas. Mosquito prevention and control is a shared responsibility, the municipality said, adding that cooperation between the municipality, the relevant services and residents can limit breeding sites and help protect public health.Read more: “I thought he’d had a stroke”: wife describes husband’s West Nile virus ordeal Subscribe to our Newsletter Latest News Don Quixote at Paphos Castle: How Cyprus is turning into a new point on the world’s cultural map Man facing child abuse charges was on bail when he allegedly attacked partner again Mavroyiannis says polls put him in first place ahead of 2028 presidential race Queer Wave film festival opens tonight bringing 50 Cyprus premieres to Nicosia Larnaca, Aradippou flooding turns roads into rivers as storm hits Cyprus unveils nine Christmas Villages for the 2026 festive season Overnight pharmacies on Friday, September 18 Follow en.philenews on Google News and be the first to know all the news about Cyprus and the world.
