**Temperatures to Exceed 40°C from Tuesday, Met Office Warns**
Cyprus is bracing for a significant heatwave as temperatures are projected to soar above 40°C starting Tuesday, according to Iasonas Christodoulou, an official from the Meteorological Office. Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency on Sunday, Christodoulou detailed the expected weather conditions for the upcoming week.
On Monday, temperatures across inland areas are forecasted to reach approximately 38°C, which aligns closely with the seasonal average for late July. However, the situation is set to change dramatically as the week progresses. “From Tuesday onwards, temperatures will exceed 40°C,” Christodoulou stated, indicating that residents should prepare for an extended period of extreme heat.
The forecast suggests that the inland temperatures will remain elevated, with potential highs of 41°C to 42°C anticipated on Wednesday and Thursday. This marks a notable increase above the average temperature for this time of year, which typically hovers around 38°C.
Christodoulou emphasized that the weather will remain predominantly clear over the next few days, contributing to the rising temperatures. He noted that while Monday's temperatures are close to average, the subsequent days will see a significant departure from normal conditions.
In addition to the heat, meteorological data reveals that rainfall in Cyprus for July has been notably above average. As of now, the island has recorded 5.6mm of rainfall, which is 215% of the long-term average of 2.6mm for the month, based on historical records from 1961 to 1990. This unusual precipitation may have contributed to the current weather patterns, but the heatwave expected this week is likely to overshadow any lingering effects of the recent rainfall.
Residents are advised to take precautions during this period of extreme heat, including staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous outdoor activities during peak hours, and seeking shade whenever possible. The Meteorological Office will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
