Both are aimed at young people and families, and both are designed to grow the stock of affordable homes. Among other things, homeowners will now be able to add an extra floor, or even a whole extra dwelling, to house their children or grandchildren. On top of that, around 570 state-owned plots will go on the market at just 25% of their market value. Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou, speaking to ‘Ph’, made one thing clear: housing policy isn’t a box you tick once. The needs of the moment demand constant revision, fresh schemes, and above all, a willingness to keep reading the room on social conditions. These plans have to evolve with the people they’re meant to serve. As the minister went on to explain, housing is a tangled problem, and no single fix will untangle it. The two new schemes, he said, are part of a wider housing strategy resting on two pillars: growing the housing stock itself, and making it genuinely possible for people to get their hands on an affordable home. Housing is nothing new. It’s a problem this country has wrestled with for generations, one with real social weight behind it. Plenty has been tried over the years, and some of it has actually worked. But as we’ve already said, this isn’t a problem you solve once and walk away from; it demands constant, ongoing action. As the President put it himself: “From the very first moment we took charge of this country, we designed, launched and are now delivering more than 10 housing schemes.” Ioannou also touched on state land. Asked directly, he said the government intends to put state land to work for families struggling to get a home, whilst also giving a boost to the communities where that land sits. Those plots will go for 25% of market value, a significant cut to the cost of getting hold of land for anyone who qualifies. Everyone agrees housing is one of the defining problems of our time. Buying a home has become eye-wateringly expensive, out of reach for most middle-income families, and renting is no refuge either: prices are sky-high, and in places like Limassol, renting has become simply unaffordable for a huge slice of the population. So any housing scheme built around genuine social goals is a step in the right direction, and a real contribution to tackling this problem. But the effort can’t stop here. It has to keep going.
