Police and the Deputy Ministry of Shipping are investigating the circumstances of the 76-year-old’s death and the sinking of his boat, “Perla Bianca,” which was also carrying his 30-year-old daughter and 57-year-old partner. The Marine Accident and Incident Investigation Committee (MAIC) will separately investigate the sinking of “Petsas I,” a coastal passenger vessel. The division of responsibilities between the two bodies was clarified at a wide-ranging meeting on Monday at the Deputy Ministry of Shipping. Following the meeting, the Deputy Ministry announced it would work with other relevant authorities to remove all pollutants, debris and both wrecks from the sea without delay. Until that process is complete, an open-ended NAVTEX notice issued by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) will remain in force, alerting mariners to the presence of wreckage in the area. The Deputy Ministry said these steps were necessary “for the protection of the marine environment from pollution, and to safeguard the safety of human life at sea and navigation in the area.” Autopsy findings The police side of the first investigation is at an advanced stage, according to Phileleftheros. Central to its progress are the findings of Mavropoulos’s autopsy, which found that he died of drowning, following multiple bodily injuries consistent with rough seas and an accidental collision involving the boat he was on. The autopsy was carried out by forensic pathologists Angeliki Papetta and Orthodoxos Orthodoxou. The findings effectively confirmed that Mavropoulos, who had tried to save his boat, became trapped in its wreckage, suffering multiple injuries before drowning. Officers at Ayia Napa Police Station, who are investigating the case as an unnatural and sudden death, continue to take witness statements. As of Monday afternoon, statements had been taken from all four survivors, including Mavropoulos’s daughter. A statement is also expected from his partner, who was discharged from hospital on Monday. Two separate legal remits The Deputy Ministry of Shipping will contribute to the investigation on maritime safety matters, since the sinking of “Perla Bianca” does not fall within the MAIC’s remit under the law. The MAIC, for its part, will investigate maritime safety issues relating to the sinking of “Petsas I,” under the Investigation of Marine Accidents and Incidents Law (94(I)/2012, as amended). Once its investigation — which carries no criminal dimension — is complete, the MAIC will submit a report with its conclusions and, where required, issue safety recommendations.
