**Train Passed Red Signal Before Fatal Crash - Report**
An interim report from the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has revealed that a train driver involved in a fatal crash in Bedfordshire passed a red signal moments before the collision. The tragic incident occurred on Friday, June 24, 2026, resulting in the death of train driver Shaun Burton, aged 60, and injuries to approximately 100 passengers.
The collision took place at around 17:15 BST near Elstow, when a London-bound train collided with the rear of a stationary train. According to the RAIB, the stationary train had unexpectedly come to a halt due to a malfunction in its Automatic Warning System (AWS) equipment. Investigators noted that data indicates the signal behind the stopped train was red at the time of the crash.
The train that collided with the stationary one had begun its journey in Corby. It was reported that the train passed the red signal and activated its brakes approximately nine seconds before the impact. At the time of the collision, the train was traveling at approximately 76 mph, which had reduced to 49 mph upon impact.
The RAIB's ongoing investigation will examine the actions of those involved in the incident and any contributing factors that may have influenced their decisions. British Transport Police have confirmed that 53 individuals remain hospitalized, with eight in critical condition following the crash.
Passenger Pete Knapp, who was on board during the incident, described the experience as akin to "a bomb explosion," highlighting the severity of the collision and the chaos that ensued.
In response to the tragedy, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer expressed his condolences in the House of Commons, stating he was "deeply saddened" by the death of the train driver and extended his sympathies to Burton's family, who have requested privacy during this difficult time.
