The two boys, who had travelled to Cyprus recently to spend the holidays with their father, were discovered locked inside a saloon car parked in a field next to the apartment block where the father and his partner lived. Ambulance crews rushed to the scene and attempted to resuscitate them, but it was too late. The village chief of Xylofagou, Giorgos Ioulianos, told philenews that he had been told that the father had left for work that morning, followed by his partner at around 8am, leaving the children alone in the house. “It appears they got into the car, locked themselves in and couldn’t get out and died from suffocation,” he said, describing the incident as one of the worst tragedies the community had seen in recent years. How the boys came to be locked inside the vehicle had not been established by Sunday evening. Burns were found on their bodies, indicating they had been trapped inside for a number of hours. The car windows had to be smashed to free them. The father and stepmother were arrested late Sunday afternoon on suspicion of negligence. A decision on whether they will be brought before Dhekelia Court for detention orders is expected today. News of the deaths shook the community of Xylofagou. Dozens of residents gathered at the scene until late Sunday night seeking information about the circumstances of the boys’ deaths.
