**UK Air Traffic Control Outage Attributed to Software Defect**
The recent UK air traffic control outage, which disrupted travel for hundreds of thousands of passengers, has been identified as a result of a software defect, according to Martin Rolfe, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Air Traffic Services (NATS). This incident, which occurred last week, led to approximately 2,000 flight cancellations and significant operational challenges for airlines, resulting in millions of pounds in costs as they worked to reallocate crews and aircraft and process passenger refunds.
In a statement released alongside a preliminary report on the incident, Rolfe explained that the outage stemmed from a specific issue within a small subsection of the flight data system's coding. He assured that the problem had been identified and that mitigation measures were in place while a permanent solution undergoes safety testing. Rolfe emphasized that the outage was not related to previous incidents in 2023, nor was it caused by any military intervention, as some reports had suggested. He also stated that safety was not compromised during the outage.
The incident has drawn sharp criticism from the airline industry, with calls for Rolfe's resignation intensifying. Ryanair, Europe's largest airline by passenger numbers, has been particularly vocal in its demands for accountability. Neil McMahon, Ryanair's Chief Operations Officer, expressed frustration with the situation, stating, “Martin Rolfe has run out of excuses. The ‘software ate my homework’ is not an acceptable explanation.” He further questioned how many times the UK air traffic control system would need to fail before Rolfe would take responsibility.
Transport Minister Heidi Alexander has also condemned the disruption, labeling it “completely unacceptable.” She has called for an independent review by the Civil Aviation Authority and demanded a comprehensive report from NATS to understand why the defect was not detected and rectified before it caused widespread chaos. Alexander underscored the importance of ensuring that the national infrastructure is prepared for future challenges.
The NATS report detailed the technical aspects of the outage, explaining that it was triggered by a request for an identification code from an aircraft, which was subsequently interrupted by a higher-priority request. The timing of these requests was critical; had the higher-priority request arrived even a millisecond earlier or later, the system would have functioned normally. The error led to the activation of backup protocols, necessitating manual flight handovers and resulting in reduced capacity and subsequent delays throughout the air traffic system.
This incident follows a series of previous outages that have raised concerns about the reliability of the UK's air traffic control system. A prior shutdown in August 2023, which was attributed to a rare occurrence involving conflicting flight plan waypoints, cost airlines an estimated £100 million (approximately $136 million). Additionally, a smaller issue in July 2025 caused by a radar fault resulted in 150 flight cancellations.
As NATS continues to investigate the latest outage and implement corrective measures, the airline industry and government officials are pressing for accountability and improvements to ensure the resilience and efficiency of the air traffic control system. The focus remains on preventing similar incidents in the future and restoring confidence in the UK's aviation infrastructure.
