In a written statement, Varnava said it was “inconceivable” for names to be mentioned lightly, reputations to be tarnished and shadows to be cast over him. He said he had been greatly surprised to learn that his name appeared in the conclusions of the investigation linked to the book State Mafia. Varnava said he unequivocally expressed dissatisfaction over the references made to his name in the report. With respect to the committee, he said he considered its conclusions to be wrong and added that, when and if the evidence is assessed, those involved would realise their mistake. “It is inconceivable for names to be mentioned lightly, for consciences to be tarnished and for shadows to be cast over me,” he said. Varnava said his 15-year presence in the country’s political life had proved the honesty, integrity and conscientiousness he showed in carrying out his duties as a member of the House of Representatives. He said he had never allowed any shadow or doubt to be left over him and had never committed any punishable act that would justify the references made in the report or what he described as the public humiliation of his personality. Varnava said he was placing himself at the disposal of any state authority that would examine the report. “The people know very well my character, my honesty, my credibility and my contribution to society,” he said.
