**Volcano Eruption Triggers Flight Suspensions at Indonesia's Main Airport**
A significant volcanic eruption at Mount Anak Krakatoa has led to the suspension of hundreds of flights at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Indonesia's primary international gateway, stranding tens of thousands of passengers. The eruption, which began late Friday night, has generated continuous seismic activity, including lava fountains and loud booming sounds, alarming residents in the surrounding areas.
On Sunday morning, authorities detected ash from the volcano in the airspace near the airport, prompting the suspension of 209 flights. The Indonesian transport ministry reported that the flight disruptions are expected to last until 13:30 local time (0630 GMT). The impact has been particularly felt on routes to and from Singapore, as well as other international destinations such as Doha, Sydney, and Kuala Lumpur. More than 22,000 travelers have been affected by these cancellations and delays.
In light of the ongoing volcanic activity, which included two additional eruptions early Sunday, health officials have advised residents in the vicinity to remain indoors and wear face masks. This precaution is aimed at reducing the risks associated with ash inhalation, which can pose respiratory, eye, and skin hazards.
Despite the intensity of the eruptions, authorities have confirmed that there is no tsunami warning associated with the current activity of Mount Anak Krakatoa. The volcano, located in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra, has a history of eruptions, having emerged from the sea in the early 20th century following the catastrophic eruption of its predecessor, Mount Krakatoa, in 1883.
