His client remains in custody, he said. Stavrou said he was informed the file would be sent from police to the Law Office with a specific recommendation for further instructions, which did happen, but that nothing further was communicated to him. He said he learned from press reports that the file had since been returned from the Law Office to investigators with instructions to carry out specific actions in order to complete the examinations. Stavrou said he had been told he needed to attend court in Paphos to expect that a case would be filed, but that this never happened. “The result of all this is that the man remains in custody over the weekend,” Stavrou said, arguing that the police sending the file to the Law Office meant the investigation had been completed, and questioning why his client had not been released and what remaining investigative work could be affected by his release. Stavrou said the eight-day detention order issued against his client expires on Tuesday, July 21, 2026. The Briton had asked, in a letter to Police Headquarters, to be released immediately under conditions so that he and his wife could personally tell their five-year-old daughter about the death of her brother. So far, the couple has only told the girl that her brother is in hospital. The boy died on July 12 after falling through an open corridor window on the fourth floor of the hotel, where he had been playing with his father, landing on the building’s first-floor veranda. The father was remanded for eight days by Paphos District Court shortly afterwards. Meanwhile, both the family and the body of the three-year-old remain on the island awaiting developments.
