Buffavento Castle is one of the notable historical places in Cyprus. This page can be expanded with detailed visitor information, history and practical tips.
Buffavento Castle is a medieval fortress in the Kyrenia mountain range of Cyprus, standing as the highest of the island's three mountain castles at 950 meters above sea level. Its name, of Italian origin, poetically translates to "Defier of the Winds" due to its exposed, gusty mountain perch. Built primarily as a watchtower and a political prison, the castle saw very little active combat throughout its lifespan, relying heavily on its naturally inaccessible terrain for defense.1. Byzantine Origins (10th–11th Century)Arab Raid Defense: The Byzantines established the initial fortress around the 10th or 11th century to protect the island against Arab pirate raids. The Signal Axis: Buffavento sat perfectly between Saint Hilarion Castle (west) and Kantara Castle (east).Beacon Warning System: Guards lit torches at night to pass immediate distress signals across the mountain tops to Nicosia and Kyrenia.2. The Crusades & Richard the Lionheart (1191)The Flight of Komnenos: When King Richard the Lionheart invaded Cyprus in 1191, the island's self-proclaimed Byzantine ruler, Isaac Komnenos, fled into the mountains.English Capture: Isaac's daughter took shelter inside Buffavento. The castle surrendered to English forces after its sister fortresses fell.Templar Transition: Richard briefly sold the island to the Knights Templar, whose brief, oppressive rule ended after a bloody revolt in Nicosia.3. The Lusignan Golden Age (1192–1489)Peak Prosperity: Under the French Lusignan dynasty, the castle was heavily fortified, expanded, and took on its final architectural shape.Château du Lion: Known in medieval French chronicles as the "Castle of the Lion," it became a high-security political prison. The Visconti Tragedy: King Peter I notoriously imprisoned his former friend John Visconti here; Visconti was left to starve to death in the isolated cells after exposing the Queen’s infidelity.4. Venetian Decline and Modern EraShift to the Coast: The Republic of Venice took control of Cyprus in the late 14th century and shifted military strategy entirely toward coastal fortifications like Famagusta and Kyrenia.Dismantling: The Venetians intentionally abandoned and partially dismantled the mountaintop fortresses to cut down on garrison upkeep costs.Wildfire Survival: The rugged ruins narrowly escaped total destruction in 1995 during a catastrophic forest fire that scorched 16,000 acres around the peak.
