Kyrenia Castle is one of the notable historical places in Cyprus. This page can be expanded with detailed visitor information, history and practical tips.
Kyrenia Castle (Girne Kalesi), situated at the eastern end of the historic Kyrenia harbour, was originally constructed by the Byzantines in the 7th century AD to defend the city against Arab maritime raids. Over the centuries, the fortress was expanded and heavily modified by successive rulers—including the Lusignans, Venetians, Ottomans, and British—resulting in the massive, complex fortification standing today.🛡️ Historical ErasByzantine Roots (7th–12th Century): Built over possible Roman remains to secure the coastline. The first major historical mention occurred in 1191 when King Richard the Lionheart captured it during the Third Crusade.Lusignan Expansion (1192–1489): The Frankish Lusignan kings enlarged the castle, added a moat, built living quarters, and added dungeons. It withstood several brutal sieges, including a four-year siege by the Genoese in 1371.Venetian Overhaul (1489–1570): Fearing an Ottoman invasion, the Venetians completely remodeled the complex to withstand modern artillery. They demolished three of the thin Lusignan towers and replaced them with massive, thick-set circular bastions.Ottoman & British Rule (1570–1960): The castle surrendered without a fight to the Ottomans in 1570. During the British colonial era, it served as a police training school and a prison for EOKA fighters.🏛️ Key Highlights Inside the WallsAncient Shipwreck Museum: Houses the remains and cargo (almonds and wine amphorae) of a Greek merchant vessel from 300 BC, making it one of the oldest recovered shipwrecks in marine archaeology.Church of St. George: A 12th-century Byzantine/Templar cross-in-square chapel located near the castle entrance.Tomb of Sadik Pasha: The resting place of the Ottoman Admiral who captured Kyrenia in 1570.Historical Exhibits: Displays showcasing Neolithic settlements, Bronze Age tombs, and military weaponry tracing the castle’s life
