As Philenews reports, early next week will see major developments on the findings of the ‘Mafia State’ report, with the Ιndependent Authority Against Corruption delivering its report to Attorney General Yiorgos Savvides and Tax Commissioner Sotiris Markides, along with all the evidence that has been gathered since 2024. According to due process, a Prosecutor’s Council made up of senior Service members, will begin to closely study and evaluate the findings, as next steps will be mapped out. The Cabinet is also expected to clear up its intentions on whether it will be appointing independent criminal investigators, a likely course of action, according to recent remarks by government spokesman Constandinos Letympiotis. The real focus however will not be in the possibilities and obscurities of next legal steps, but a press conference set by Nikos Anastasiades for Tuesday the 23rd at the Journalists’ Union, a highly symbolic venue in itself, as the ‘Mafia State’ report was based on accusations formulated by journalist and the former President’s confidante Makarios Droushiotis. Anastasiades will provide his own analysis of the Authority’s Report, having already briefly commented on the findings in a written statement, serving as the precursor hors d’oeuvre to his more extensive remarks. ‘Claims of profiterring, wealth accumulation, corruption and a number of other slanderous accusations claimed by Makarios Droushiotis have all but collapsed’, the former President had commented in his short statement. He had further noted that most of the accusations recorded in the report, were not even addressed to him during the investigation, so he could provide all the necessary, well documented responses. Long process Once again, the arm of the law is not so long, with Philenews reporting that the legal process of untangling all the cases in the findings will take a considerable amount of time. And should a criminal investigation be decided, things will take even longer, as investigators, whether independent or police appointed will start from scratch, going through all the evidence again, as the Independent Authority Against Corruption only has investigative not criminal prosecution powers. In other words, for any evidence to be credible, it has to be re-evaluated and confirmed by prosecutors, who can take any case to Court. When investigators complete the file (again), it will be re-submitted to the Legal Service for assessment and final decisions on whether an indictment will proceed.
