The demonstration was organised by Kourion Municipality and attended by residents of the Akrotiri municipal district, the Merra Akrotiri Committee, the “Akrotiri Hour Zero” movement, organised groups, members of the Green Party and other members of the public. The march began at 9.30am from the first entrance to the Akrotiri municipal district and proceeded towards the gate of the British Bases, where a resolution was handed to a representative. Protesters carried placards bearing slogans including “Akrotiri Hour Zero”, “No to antennas, yes to health” and “No to the antennas of death”. Pantelis Georgiou: ‘We raise our voice for our land’ Before the march began, Kourion Mayor Pantelis Georgiou said people had gathered because they “love their land” and have the right to protect the environment, their quality of life and their children’s future. “Akrotiri is not simply a place on the map. It is a place of unique natural beauty, a wetland of international importance, a place of history, culture and life in our Cyprus,” he said. Georgiou said the local community opposed the installation of new antennas and called for respect for residents, the environment and the voice of the community. “In a short while, we will deliver the resolution of today’s gathering to the British Bases Administration. We are doing so institutionally, with arguments, with dignity and with absolute respect for democratic procedures,” he said. He also called on the Republic of Cyprus to stand “beside its citizens” and defend the right of local communities to have a say in decisions affecting their future. “Today we are not raising our voice against anyone. We are raising it for our land. For Akrotiri, for Kourion Municipality, for our Cyprus,” Georgiou said. Resolution handed to British Bases In the resolution delivered to the British Bases, Kourion Municipality, the Merra Akrotiri Committee, the “Akrotiri Hour Zero” movement, residents and organised groups expressed categorical opposition to the installation and operation of new antennas and other military infrastructure in the area. According to the resolution, participants raised concerns over what they described as the further militarisation of the area, particularly amid heightened international tensions, and argued that the developments could raise issues relating to safety, public health and the environment. They called for: the immediate suspension of all work relating to the installation of new antennas; a review of the plans taking into account the concerns of the local community; full transparency and official information on the purpose of the installations and their possible effects on human health and the environment; and meaningful dialogue with the Republic of Cyprus, local authorities and residents before any further development of military infrastructure. The resolution described the protest as a “clear expression of the will of citizens” and said its aim was to seek a place that is “peaceful, safe and free from actions that intensify militarisation”. Giorgos Konstantinou: ‘We will not negotiate over health and the environment’ Addressing the gathering, Akrotiri Deputy Mayor Giorgos Konstantinou said the protest was sending a message to the British Bases that residents were not prepared to negotiate over “our health, our property or the environment”. “Thank you all for being here. I believe the entire municipality, the whole of Limassol, will stand by us,” he said, calling on residents to remain united and ready for the next steps.
