Police remanded a 40-year-old water sports business owner for six days over the incident. Investigators are looking into offences including causing grievous bodily harm, theft and threats. The Limassol Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is searching for other people believed to have been involved, while the investigation continues with witness statements being taken and CCTV footage examined. According to the complaint made to police, the incident took place yesterday, Sunday, when the 48-year-old went with his family to a beach area near a well-known Amathounta hotel. He said that on reaching the western side of the hotel, where there is access to the beach, he tried to park his car, but the access was blocked by a private vehicle. He got out and tried to find the vehicle’s owner, to ask him to move it. He claimed he touched the vehicle and lifted the windscreen wipers to set off the alarm. A short time later, a woman arrived at the scene and, according to the complainant, began shouting at him. A man then arrived who, the 48-year-old said, told him to leave the area. According to his statement, the man then moved a boat trolley and blocked the entrance so they could not leave with their car. The 48-year-old said he then began phoning and calling other people to come to the scene. He alleged that 4-5 people arrived shortly afterwards and, together with the 40-year-old suspect, began punching him, while he tried to defend himself. The complainant said he managed to get away and get into the passenger seat of his car, where his minor children were in the back seats. He claimed the group opened the door and hit him again, while the 40-year-old allegedly threw stones at the car, one of which struck him in the chest. After the incident, the 48-year-old went to Germasogeia Police Station, where he filed a complaint and identified to police a person he said had taken part in the incident. The 48-year-old was taken to a private hospital, where he was found to have a broken nose, grazes on his hands and a bruise on his forehead. His wife also alleged that the suspect removed the temporary registration plates from their car and threatened to kill them if they went ahead with a police complaint. The 40-year-old’s account Under questioning, the 40-year-old gave his own version of events. An arrest warrant had been issued against him, and he was arrested at Limassol General Hospital, where he had gone for medical examinations. He was found to have multiple facial injuries and was held for treatment in the surgical ward at Limassol General Hospital under guard. He said he owns a water sports business and that, with permission from Amathounta Municipality, he parks his vehicle on the road leading to the beach. He said the purpose was to prevent other vehicles entering and to stop cars from accessing the beach. He also said he was told by an employee that the 48-year-old had caused damage to his vehicle and then went to the scene, where, he claimed, an altercation took place. The 40-year-old said he moved the trolley and blocked the road until police arrived so he could report the damage. He claimed the 48-year-old then attacked him and punched him in the face. He admitted throwing a stone at the 48-year-old’s car and taking his number plates for evidence purposes. Today, members of the Limassol CID asked Limassol District Court to issue a remand order for the 40-year-old, with the request examined in his absence. His lawyer objected to the request, and the court limited his detention to a period of six days.
