The British royal coat of arms displayed at the old courts in occupied Nicosia has been left vulnerable to the elements due to a broken protective shield, which has remained unrepaired for approximately six months. Reports from the Turkish Cypriot newspaper Kibris Postasi indicate that the transparent panel, which has historically safeguarded the emblem, cracked in May and has yet to be replaced.
The old courts, a significant historical site, were constructed between 1900 and 1904 during British colonial rule. This building occupies a location of historical importance, previously the site of the ruins of the Lusignan palace, the medieval residence of the Frankish kings. The architectural design of the old courts was overseen by Charles Bellamy, who was the director of public works at the time. Initially, the structure served multiple governmental functions, housing the law courts, postal service, land registry office, and police force. Subsequent expansions in the 1920s added further blocks to the east and west of the original building.
Despite renovations that took place between 1998 and 2009, the British royal coat of arms has not seen significant changes and is now described as being in a state of dilapidation. The emblem, prominently positioned at the entrance of the old courts, is also found above the old government house, which currently serves as the presidential palace for President Nikos Christodoulides.
