**Can Sheep Save the Glaciers? Swiss Scientists Put Wool to the Test**
As Switzerland faces the pressing challenge of glacier shrinkage due to climate change, a team of researchers is exploring an innovative solution in the Alpine region: the use of sheep's wool. This initiative, part of the "Keep It Wool" project, aims to assess whether this underutilized natural resource can effectively mitigate the impacts of global warming on the country’s glaciers.
For years, Swiss authorities have employed synthetic tarpaulins to cover glacier surfaces during the summer months. These tarpaulins serve to reflect sunlight and reduce heat absorption, thereby slowing the melting process of the ice sheets that have characterized the Alpine landscape for centuries. However, these plastic coverings have raised environmental concerns due to their tendency to shed microfibers, which can contribute to pollution.
The "Keep It Wool" project is spearheaded by the environmental organization Summit Foundation in collaboration with the University of Lausanne. The initiative seeks to explore biodegradable alternatives to synthetic materials, while also addressing the issue of wool waste in Switzerland, where an estimated 40-70% of sheep wool is discarded annually.
This summer, which has seen record-high temperatures leading to accelerated glacier melting, the project team laid two prototype wool blankets on a 200-square-meter section of the Tsanfleuron Glacier in western Switzerland. These blankets were produced by the Swiss company Fisolan and were tested against conventional geotextile covers to evaluate their effectiveness in limiting ice melt.
Timothee Steiner, the project manager, explained that the goal of the experiment was twofold: to find a sustainable use for Swiss wool and to provide a potential solution for glacier preservation. The urgency of the project has been underscored by the recent environmental impacts observed in the region, including increased rockslides and severe weather events linked to glacier loss.
The results from the initial phase of the project have been promising. Measurements taken bi-weekly throughout the summer indicated that the wool blankets were effective in limiting melting, comparable to the performance of traditional synthetic covers. Niklaus Saegesser from Fisolan expressed surprise at the durability of the wool material, stating, “I thought it wouldn’t be stable enough.” Student researcher Elliot Gaffiot also noted the unexpected success of the project, saying, “Now we have a result we can see and even touch. It worked incredibly well.”
Despite the encouraging findings, the project's advocates emphasize that wool blankets are not a panacea for the broader issue of climate change. Currently, only about 0.02% of Switzerland’s glacier surface is covered by protective materials, and experts agree that the most effective long-term strategy for slowing ice loss remains the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, primarily from fossil fuel consumption.
As the "Keep It Wool" project continues, it serves as a reminder of the innovative approaches being explored to combat climate change while also promoting sustainability in the use of natural resources. The outcome of this experiment could pave the way for new methods of glacier preservation, but the fight against global warming will ultimately require a multifaceted approach that addresses the root causes of climate change.
