**Cyprus, New Jersey Look to Expand Defence Partnership**
Cyprus and the New Jersey National Guard are exploring opportunities to enhance their defence collaboration under the US State Partnership Programme (SPP). This initiative aims to strengthen military and security ties between the United States and partner countries. Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas made this announcement following a meeting with New Jersey Adjutant General Brigadier General Yvonne L. Mays at his office on Friday.
During their discussions, Palmas and Mays reviewed the progress made under the SPP since its inception and considered ways to broaden the scope of their cooperation. In a statement posted on social media platform X, Palmas expressed gratitude to the New Jersey National Guard for its role in bolstering the capabilities of the Cyprus National Guard. He reiterated the Cypriot defence ministry's commitment to deepening ties under the SPP framework.
The SPP is a US Department of Defence programme managed by the National Guard Bureau, which pairs US National Guard organizations with international partners to foster long-term military relationships. The programme originated from US initiatives in the early 1990s, following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, and has since expanded globally.
Cyprus was officially paired with the New Jersey National Guard in 2022, marking New Jersey's second SPP partnership after Albania. The formalization of this partnership included signing ceremonies held in both Nicosia and New Jersey in 2023, which underscored the commitment of both parties to enhancing their military collaboration.
Since the establishment of this partnership, activities have become increasingly dynamic. In 2024, Cypriot explosive ordnance disposal personnel received training from the New Jersey Air National Guard, focusing on critical areas such as counter-IED operations, unexploded ordnance clearance, and airbase recovery in the event of simulated attacks. These training sessions are designed to enhance the operational readiness and effectiveness of the Cypriot forces.
Further exchanges have taken place, with recent training initiatives in Cyprus concentrating on cybersecurity, network security, and leadership development. Additionally, members of the Cypriot military have traveled to the United States to participate in various training exercises, further solidifying the partnership.
In a notable event earlier this year, Cypriot National Guard personnel participated in New Jersey's Best Warrior Competition in May, showcasing their skills and fostering camaraderie between the two forces. Moreover, military leaders from Cyprus and New Jersey convened in July to strategize on cooperation for the upcoming fiscal years of 2027 and 2028, indicating a long-term commitment to the partnership.
The ongoing collaboration between Cyprus and New Jersey reflects a broader trend of increasing military cooperation among nations, aimed at enhancing regional security and stability.
