A wildfire that ignited on Saturday afternoon between the villages of Alaminos and Kofinou has resulted in the destruction of six hectares of dry vegetation and hay bales. The blaze was reported at approximately 2:45 PM, prompting a swift response from local firefighting teams.
Andreas Kettis, a spokesman for the fire service, provided details on the incident, noting that the fire affected fields, wild vegetation, and scattered hay bales in the area. Due to the significant number of hay bales involved, firefighting crews remained on-site overnight to monitor for potential flare-ups.
The firefighting effort was substantial, involving a total of four fire engines from the fire service, three from the forestry department, and additional support from a vehicle belonging to the game and fauna service. The operation was further bolstered by the deployment of seven tractors and two excavators, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.
In a broader context, Kettis reported that the fire service had responded to a total of 34 incidents in the previous 24 hours, which included 18 fires, 14 special assistance calls, and two false alarms. Over the past week, the fire service has been particularly active, attending to a total of 248 incidents. This included 79 urban fires, 40 countryside fires, 28 rescue operations, two road traffic collisions, 83 public assistance calls, and 16 false alarms.
Firefighters are expected to continue monitoring the area to ensure that the wildfire does not reignite, as the dry conditions prevalent in the region can exacerbate fire risks. The quick response from emergency services has been crucial in preventing further damage and protecting the surrounding environment.
