**Fire Crews Maintain Control Over Wildfires Near Bordeaux Amidst Rising Temperatures**
Bordeaux, France – Firefighters in France have successfully kept a significant wildfire west of Bordeaux under control overnight, despite the challenges posed by an impending heatwave and strong winds. The blaze, which has already led to mass evacuations, has devastated approximately 42,000 hectares (103,784 acres) of predominantly pine forests in the Landes region, a popular tourist destination.
Sophie Brocas, the prefect of the Gironde department, reported early Wednesday morning that the situation remained stable. “The night was quiet; the fire remains under control this morning, with several flare-ups quickly brought under control during the night,” she stated in a post on social media platform X at 0400 GMT.
The wildfire has been raging for over a week, exacerbated by a prolonged dry spell and a series of heatwaves that have gripped the region. This current heatwave marks the fourth of the summer, and meteorological forecasts predict temperatures could soar to 42 degrees Celsius (108 degrees Fahrenheit) on Wednesday. Dry winds from the southwest in the morning and shifting to the west in the afternoon are expected to further complicate firefighting efforts, potentially fanning the flames.
The scale of the wildfire has already surpassed the previous record year of 2022, indicating an unprecedented wildfire season in France. The Landes area, primarily covered by pine forests, has become increasingly vulnerable as these trees are highly flammable when dry. The fire has also resulted in the destruction of several hundred homes and prompted the evacuation of around 220,000 people, including both local residents and holidaymakers.
Evacuations have been particularly critical for those in the Cap Ferret peninsula, which is only accessible via a single road. To facilitate safe transport, authorities organized special chartered ferries to assist in the evacuation process. Meanwhile, some residents in the southern parts of the region have been allowed to return home after firefighters successfully extinguished a minor blaze near the town of Biscarrosse.
In response to the ongoing threat, several businesses on the outskirts of Bordeaux have proactively closed their operations as a precautionary measure, with the flames reportedly coming as close as 15 kilometers (nine miles) to the metropolitan area.
