Customs officers identified the five passengers on 8 August following an assessment of information, before they departed for the United Kingdom. According to the Customs Department, the tobacco packages did not carry smoking health warnings in Greek and Turkish, nor did they have the required security feature or unique traceability code, indications that the products were duty-free. Customs officers found: 15kg of tobacco in the first passenger’s luggage, comprising 300 packs of 50 grams each. 11.75kg in the second passenger’s luggage, comprising 235 packs of 50 grams each. 15kg in the third passenger’s luggage, comprising 300 packs of 50 grams each. 18kg in the fourth passenger’s luggage, comprising 360 packs of 50 grams each. 15kg in the fifth passenger’s luggage, comprising 300 packs of 50 grams each. All five passengers were arrested for offences detected in the act, while their luggage and its contents, totalling 74.75kg of tobacco, were seized. The five appeared before Larnaca District Court on Sunday, which ordered that they be remanded in custody for two days.
