Shortly after midday on Saturday, an officer from Police Headquarters Traffic Department signalled to a motorcyclist on Artemidos Avenue in Larnaca to stop for a check. The rider failed to stop and accelerated, allegedly driving recklessly and dangerously through the city’s road network. He later crashed into a railing, bringing the motorcycle to a stop, before fleeing on foot. A traffic officer chased the rider and subsequently arrested him for offences detected in the act. Checks established that the suspect was a 36-year-old man who did not hold a driving licence. He also refused to undergo a preliminary drug test. Further investigations found that the motorcycle had been stolen in Larnaca on Thursday, 6 August. The 36-year-old was taken to Larnaca General Hospital, where doctors found that he had suffered fractures to his legs. He was later charged in writing in connection with the motorcycle theft and various traffic offences before being released. He is expected to be summoned to appear before court at a later stage. Kiti Police Station and Larnaca’s Minor Offences Department are continuing their investigations.
