**Five British Nationals Arrested for Attempted Tobacco Smuggling at Larnaca Airport**
Larnaca, Cyprus – Five British citizens were apprehended at Larnaca International Airport on Saturday for allegedly attempting to smuggle nearly 75 kilograms of rolling tobacco from northern Cyprus to Manchester. The suspects were presented before the Larnaca district court on Sunday to face charges related to the incident.
According to the customs department, the arrests stemmed from the discovery of a significant quantity of rolling tobacco concealed in their luggage. Three of the suspects were found to be carrying a total of 300 packages, each weighing 50 grams, amounting to 15 kilograms per individual, which totals 45 kilograms among them. Another suspect had 235 packages, contributing an additional 11.75 kilograms, while the largest single haul was recorded from one individual who possessed 360 packages, weighing 18 kilograms. This brought the total weight of the tobacco seized to 74.75 kilograms.
The customs department noted that the packages did not carry the required bilingual health warnings in Turkish and Greek, nor did they include the security features or traceability codes typically found on tobacco products sold within the Republic of Cyprus. This absence of standard labeling suggests that the tobacco was acquired in the northern part of the island, which is outside the jurisdiction of the Republic of Cyprus.
The transfer of such a large quantity of tobacco from the north to the south is considered a violation of the Green Line Regulation, which governs the movement of goods across the divide in Cyprus. The regulation aims to prevent smuggling and ensure compliance with local laws regarding the sale and distribution of tobacco products.
Following their arrest, all five suspects were remanded in custody for a period of two days, with their next court appearance scheduled for Tuesday. The case has drawn attention due to the significant quantity of tobacco involved and the legal implications of smuggling across the Green Line.
As the investigation continues, authorities are expected to further scrutinize the circumstances surrounding the acquisition and attempted transport of the tobacco.
