**Macklemore Mural Unveiled in Gaza Following Tour Controversy**
In the aftermath of a significant controversy surrounding Ed Sheeran's upcoming tour, artists in Gaza have created a mural honoring US rapper Macklemore. The mural, which depicts Macklemore wrapped in a Palestinian flag and raising a fist, has been painted on a large slab of concrete amidst the ruins of Gaza City. This tribute follows Macklemore's removal from Sheeran's tour after he publicly called for a "Free Palestine" during a performance.
The mural, located near destroyed buildings and surrounded by rubble, carries a message of gratitude: “Thank you for using your voice for Palestine.” Artist Anne Redwan, who collaborated with fellow artist Qusai al-Helo on the mural, expressed the intention behind the artwork, stating, “We wanted to send a message to thank rapper Macklemore in this simple way.” Redwan highlighted the challenges faced by artists in Gaza, emphasizing their desire for support and recognition of the hardships they endure under siege.
Macklemore has a history of advocating for Palestinian causes, and his recent comments criticizing Israel's military actions in Gaza led to his exclusion from Sheeran's tour. The controversy surrounding Macklemore's removal from the tour has sparked a wave of pledges for financial support for Gaza. Macklemore announced that he would donate his estimated $1 million in earnings from the tour to six aid organizations focused on assisting the region. Hussein Murtaja, who leads a humanitarian group in Gaza that focuses on mental health support for children, highlighted the significance of Macklemore's solidarity beyond financial donations. He remarked, “When artists of this stature, with this many followers or fans, all come to know more about the cause, and support reaching a political solution, support achieving peace for the people of Gaza… That means a great deal to us.”
