**Monk to Appear Before Criminal Court in October for Attempted Murder Charges**
A 51-year-old monk, accused of attempting to murder a 53-year-old employee of the Saint Neophytos monastery in Tala, Paphos, is set to appear in the Paphos criminal court on October 7. The monk was referred to the court during proceedings held on Friday, where his defense lawyer, Alexandros Alexandrou, argued that the likelihood of his client being convicted is “almost non-existent.”
The incident leading to the charges occurred on August 7, when a dispute erupted at the monastery over the monk’s occupancy of two cells, one of which had previously been occupied by his father. Reports indicate that a delegation of priests had visited the monastery and advised the monk to relinquish his keys and vacate one of the cells. In response to this suggestion, the monk allegedly attacked the monastery employee, stabbing him in the throat with a sharp object.
In addition to the attempted murder charge, the monk faces accusations of transporting an offensive instrument and stabbing. Following the initial altercation, he is also reported to have injured a 27-year-old priest, causing harm to the priest’s hand with the same sharp object.
During the court proceedings, Alexandrou emphasized his client's standing in the community, asserting that the monk is “highly regarded by the people of the Paphos district.” He further dismissed claims that the monk poses a flight risk, stating that there is no reason or motive for him to leave Cyprus.
However, the prosecution disagreed with the defense's assertions and requested that the monk remain in custody until the next court appearance. The court is expected to make a decision regarding his custody status on August 18, prior to the scheduled trial date.
As the case unfolds, it has attracted attention within the local community, given the monk's position and the serious nature of the allegations against him. The upcoming court date will be pivotal in determining the next steps in this legal matter.
