**Nearly 50 Dead After Suspected Alcohol Poisoning in Nigeria**
A health crisis has emerged in Nigeria's Ondo State, where nearly 50 individuals have reportedly died due to suspected alcohol poisoning linked to a locally brewed gin known as “Monkey Tail.” The alarming situation first came to light on September 5, when health officials announced that 29 people had died within the first week following the consumption of the toxic beverage.
As of Friday, the death toll has risen to 49, according to Ondo State health commissioner Banji Ajaka. The incidents are believed to have originated from two traditional ceremonies held in the Odigbo district, where attendees consumed the locally produced alcoholic drink.
Ajaka highlighted the urgent need for awareness regarding the dangers of unregulated alcoholic beverages, which are often favored in Nigeria due to their low cost and easy availability. “The pattern of illness and reported history of exposure have raised strong epidemiological suspicion of exposure to a probable toxic alcoholic substance. However, we are yet to have laboratory evidence,” he stated in a recent announcement.
Victims of the suspected poisoning exhibited a range of severe symptoms, including headaches, body pain, breathing difficulties, altered consciousness, and blindness. Ajaka explained the rapid progression of the illness, noting that the effects of the toxic substance can lead to kidney failure, vision loss, and severe brain damage, depending on the quantity consumed.
In response to the tragic situation, local authorities have initiated investigations and taken action to prevent further incidents. Police have arrested a suspect connected to the case, although details regarding the individual and their involvement have not been disclosed.
