**Title: “Objects in the Mirror May Be Closer Than They Appear” Exhibition Launches in Nicosia’s Old City**
A new art initiative is set to transform the way residents and visitors experience art in Nicosia’s Old City. The PSI Foundation, a non-profit organization established in Limassol, is making its inaugural appearance in the capital with a satellite exhibition titled “Objects in the mirror may be closer than they appear.” This innovative project will run from October 2 to November 2, 2026, and aims to integrate video art into the everyday fabric of the city.
Curated by Evagoria Dapola, the exhibition features a diverse collection of 14 works by nine artists, strategically placed across various locations in the Old City. The exhibition kicks off at The Gym Bar on Onasagorou Street and unfolds along three streets, creating a unique route of moving images and projections for visitors to explore. This approach allows art to break free from traditional gallery spaces, inviting passersby to engage with the works in unexpected settings such as artists’ studios, architecture offices, former workshops, shopfronts, and cafés.
The title of the exhibition draws inspiration from the common warning found on car mirrors, suggesting that “objects in mirror may be closer than they appear.” In this context, it serves as a metaphor for exploring themes of distance, image, and perception. The exhibition encourages viewers to reconsider their surroundings and the images they encounter, highlighting how mirrors and screens can alter our perception of reality.
The selected video works range from intimate, personal narratives to larger-scale pieces, each contributing to the urban landscape of Nicosia. By placing art in familiar public spaces, the exhibition aims to create moments of pause and reflection for those who may not typically seek out art. This blending of art with the everyday rhythm of the Old City fosters a dialogue between the artworks and the community, making art more accessible and engaging.
“Objects in the mirror may be closer than they appear” is presented alongside another exhibition, “Bill Viola. Unspoken,” which is currently on view at the PSI Foundation in Limassol until October 24. While both exhibitions explore the viewer’s relationship with moving images, they offer distinctly different experiences based on their respective settings.
The participating video artists include Maria Anastassiou, Nadim Choufi, Danae Io, Stelios Kallinikou, Kakia Katselli, Aristotelis Nicolas Mochloulis, Alexandros Pissourios, Janis Rafa, and Constantinos Taliotis. Many of their works utilize unstaged imagery and draw from documentary and home video styles, capturing spontaneous moments and real-life images that resonate with the audience.
The PSI Foundation, which was established in 2024, has been dedicated to promoting contemporary art through dialogue and collaboration. Its previous exhibitions, such as “Casts of an Island” and the research project “Tekton,” have laid the groundwork for its current endeavors. With “Objects in the mirror may be closer than they appear,” the foundation continues to expand its mission of showcasing artistic work from Cyprus.
The exhibition will officially open on Friday, October 2, 2026, at 20:00 at The Gym Bar, located at 89 Onasagorou Street in Nicosia. It will be open to the public from Wednesday to Sunday, between 17:30 and 22:30. Visitors are encouraged to explore the various locations throughout the Old City, where art and daily life intersect in new and exciting ways.
