**Pornhub Faces UK Investigation Over Compliance with Age Verification Requirements**
Britain’s media regulator, Ofcom, announced on Wednesday that it has initiated an investigation into the adult content platform Pornhub to assess its compliance with legal obligations aimed at preventing minors from accessing pornography. This inquiry is part of the enforcement of the Online Safety Act, which mandates that online platforms implement effective age verification measures to restrict access to users under the age of 18.
The investigation comes in the wake of concerns regarding the adequacy of age checks employed by Pornhub, which is operated by Aylo. In May, Aylo indicated that Pornhub would utilize the age-verification process developed by Apple to ensure that users accessing the site are indeed over the age of 18. However, Ofcom expressed apprehension that Aylo may not have conducted adequate due diligence or testing of this age assurance process prior to its implementation.
Ofcom's statement clarified that the current investigation is focused on Aylo's practices and will not assess how Apple manages its own age verification procedures. The regulator emphasized the importance of robust age checks to safeguard children from exposure to adult content online.
Ofcom holds significant regulatory authority and can impose substantial penalties on businesses that fail to comply with the Online Safety Act. The agency has the power to fine companies up to £18 million (approximately $23.93 million) or 10% of their qualifying worldwide revenue. Additionally, Ofcom has previously issued fines exceeding £1 million to various adult content platforms due to failures in their age verification processes.
