**President ‘Proud’ of Achievements at Commonwealth Games**
Cyprus has made a significant mark at the 2026 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow, securing a total of 12 medals and finishing 14th in the overall standings. This achievement has prompted President Nikos Christodoulides to extend his heartfelt congratulations to the athletes who represented the nation.
In a written statement released on Monday, President Christodoulides expressed his pride in the accomplishments of the Cypriot athletes, stating, “With feelings of pride, I warmly congratulate our athletes who represented the Republic of Cyprus at the Commonwealth Games, and gave us great emotions.” He emphasized that the nation’s ranking of 14th, which included one gold, five silver, and six bronze medals, is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the athletes.
The Commonwealth Games featured over 3,000 athletes from 72 countries, making Cyprus's achievement particularly noteworthy. The President highlighted that the participation and successes of the Cypriot team reflect not only the athletes' sacrifices but also the high standards of sports in Cyprus. He acknowledged the support provided by the Cyprus Sports Organisation, which plays a crucial role in promoting and facilitating sports within the country.
In his statement, President Christodoulides also recognized the contributions of coaches, sports federations, and the Cyprus Olympic Committee. He extended special thanks to the families of the athletes, who provide unwavering support throughout their sporting journeys. “My wishes for even greater success in the future are accompanied by the assurance that the government will continue to substantially support Cypriot sport,” he concluded.
Cyprus was among only 14 delegations to achieve a double-digit medal count at the Games, underscoring the strength and potential of Cypriot athletes. The Cypriot team comprised 36 athletes competing in various disciplines, including weightlifting, para weightlifting, gymnastics, swimming, athletics, and judo. Throughout the Games, competitors delivered impressive performances, securing multiple podium finishes.
The highlight of the final day came when judoka Christodoulos Christodoulides clinched Cyprus's first gold medal in the men’s +100kg category. His victory was celebrated as a crowning achievement for the Cypriot delegation. In the men’s under-100kg category, Georgios Kroussaniotakis added to the medal tally by defeating fellow Cypriot Aristos Michael to secure a bronze medal. Zanet Michaelidou also contributed to the success with a bronze in the women’s under-78kg event, sharing the podium with Canada’s Coralie Godbout.
Prior to these victories, Odysseas Georgakis had already won bronze in the men’s under-81kg category on Saturday. The judo events proved to be particularly fruitful for the Cypriot team, with Sofia Asvesta earning silver in the women’s under-52kg division, while Giorgi Balartashvili and Petros Christodoulides took silver and bronze, respectively, in the men’s under-66kg event.
The gymnastics team also showcased their talent, with Marios Georgiou winning two silver medals in the parallel bars and horizontal bar events. Neofytos Kyriacou added a bronze in the vault, and Milan Trajkovic secured bronze in the 110m hurdles. Hammer thrower Iosif Kesidis contributed a silver medal to the final count, bringing Cyprus's total medal tally to an impressive 12.
