Mercedes driver George Russell has expressed renewed confidence in his ability to compete for race victories consistently following his impressive performance at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Saturday. Russell described the event as the most dominant weekend of his career, achieving a 'grand slam' by starting from pole position, leading every lap, setting the fastest lap, and ultimately clinching the win.
Reflecting on his achievement, Russell stated, “I think I never lost that faith in myself.” Throughout the race, he successfully defended his position against a strong challenge from Max Verstappen, showcasing his skill and determination as he navigated the demanding Baku circuit.
This victory marks a significant turnaround for Russell, who faced challenges earlier in the season, particularly in comparison to his teammate, 20-year-old Kimi Antonelli, who has been leading the championship standings. Antonelli has secured eight wins this season, while Russell has celebrated three victories. However, Russell's recent performances suggest a shift in momentum, attributed to the adjustments he made to his driving style during the summer break to better adapt to the 2026 cars.
“I’ve been on the front row in three of them, three podiums from the four races,” Russell noted, indicating a resurgence in form since the summer hiatus. He emphasized his determination to compete for wins in every race moving forward, stating, “I feel I can fight for victory week-in, week-out now.”
In contrast, Antonelli experienced a challenging weekend in Baku, starting from 16th position after crashing out of qualifying and finishing fifth in the race. This outcome allowed Russell to close the gap in the championship standings, reducing Antonelli's lead from 81 points to 66.
Despite the narrowing gap, Russell remains focused on his immediate goal of winning races rather than fixating on the championship title. “If the season were to have started today, or since the summer break, I feel very much I would have been able to fight,” he said. “Now I’ve got this big deficit. So I’m not chasing that. I’m chasing to win every race, and what will be, will be.”
