**Scenes of Cyprus Stitched into New Exhibition**
A new exhibition titled "Stitched into the Landscape" is now open at the Elyssia Boutique Hotel in Pedoulas, showcasing the collaborative work of artists Andreani Panayides and Vasilis Savvidis. The exhibition, which began on September 11, will run until November 11, 2023, and is supported by the Cultural Decentralisation Programme 2026 of the Deputy Ministry of Culture.
"Stitched into the Landscape" features a unique blend of artistry that immerses visitors in the essence of Cypriot life through the traditional craft of Lefkara lace. The exhibition is characterized by its limited number of pieces but aims to create an immersive experience for attendees. Among the displayed works is a tavli (backgammon) set, creatively reimagined with its dice and stones replaced by intricate Lefkara lace, symbolizing the fusion of tradition with contemporary life.
The exhibition invites viewers to step into a village atmosphere, where the pathways and doors are reimagined through the lens of Lefkara lace, a craft that Panayides emphasizes as a means to slow down and appreciate the world around us. “I wanted people to feel the slowness of Cypriot life, siga siga,” Panayides remarked, highlighting the importance of being present in a fast-paced society. She notes that Lefkara lace serves as a reminder of a different way of living, encouraging individuals to take a moment to breathe and observe their surroundings.
The collaboration between Panayides and Savvidis blends traditional craftsmanship with modern artistic techniques. Savvidis, known for his work in animation, has brought a fresh perspective to the traditional craft, while Panayides, the founder of the Folkmona fashion brand, has trained in Lefkara lace at the Cyprus Handicraft Service. Their partnership has allowed them to breathe new life into Lefkara lace, showcasing its relevance in today's world.
In addition to the exhibition, Panayides is offering free workshops on Lefkara lace for the community and visitors. Scheduled for September 12 and 13, as well as October 10 and 11, these workshops aim to teach the craft to a new generation, ensuring that the tradition continues to thrive.
The exhibition serves as an invitation to embrace the slower pace of life, reflecting the "siga siga" rhythm that is intrinsic to Cypriot culture. Through the intricate hand-stitched pieces, Panayides and Savvidis capture the beauty of everyday moments—depicting old doors, windows, and the familiar sights of Cypriot life, including a game of tavli and a cup of coffee. Each graphic work, drawn by Savvidis with a fabric pen, is meticulously hand-stitched by Panayides, ensuring that no piece is printed and all are crafted with care.
