**Students Discover Akrotiri’s Wildlife Through Hands-On Environmental Learning**
This academic year, over 5,200 students from 160 schools across Cyprus engaged in immersive environmental education programs at the Akrotiri Environmental Education Centre (AEEC). The AEEC, which collaborates with the Unit for Education for the Environment and Sustainable Development (EESD), reported that the 2025-2026 school year has been particularly busy, welcoming a diverse range of participants from pre-primary to secondary school levels, as well as university groups.
Thomas Hadjikyriakou, the manager of the AEEC, emphasized the importance of these programs in providing students and teachers with opportunities to experience environmental education outside of traditional classroom settings. “We offered schools a unique opportunity to connect with nature while exploring the ecological and cultural importance of the Akrotiri peninsula,” he stated.
The educational visits typically commence with an introduction to the geological features of the Akrotiri peninsula, highlighting the significance of its protected wetlands and turtle nesting beaches. Following this introduction, students engage in various interactive activities, including QR-code scavenger hunts in the exhibition areas, viewing a short film about the region's biodiversity, and observing birdlife at Akrotiri Salt Lake through telescopes. Outdoor learning sessions further enhance the educational experience, allowing students to interact directly with the natural environment.
Koula Michael, an EESD teacher, noted that the AEEC hosts school groups from every district in Cyprus almost daily. “Students aged five to 18, together with their teachers and university groups, have the opportunity to interact directly with the natural environment of the Akrotiri peninsula through a variety of educational activities,” she explained. The programs are specifically designed to foster a deeper understanding of environmental protection and sustainable development through practical, hands-on experiences.
Among the various activities offered, the ‘Magic – Nature – Senses’ program has proven particularly popular among younger children. Older students have the opportunity to participate in workshops that focus on traditional basket weaving in Akrotiri village, wetland conservation, and strategies for reducing ecological footprints. These workshops also highlight the mission and activities of the environmental education centre itself.
Located in Akrotiri village, the AEEC provides environmental education programs throughout the school year. Schools interested in participating can apply through the Ministry of Education, while members of the public can contact the centre directly to arrange educational visits and guided tours.
The AEEC's efforts to engage students with the unique ecosystems of the Akrotiri peninsula not only promote environmental awareness but also encourage a sense of responsibility towards nature among the younger generation. Through these hands-on experiences, students are better equipped to understand the importance of conservation and sustainable practices in their communities and beyond.
