**Suspected Arson Investigated After Two Fires in Lysos**
Authorities are investigating a suspected arson incident following two separate fires that occurred in close proximity to each other in the village of Lysos. The first fire ignited around 4 PM in the Potamoudes area, quickly spreading and consuming approximately seven hectares of land before being fully contained by 6 PM.
According to Glafkos Kyriakou, a spokesman for the Forestry Department, the circumstances surrounding the two fires suggest a deliberate act. "The two incidents point to a malicious act," Kyriakou stated, highlighting the unusual timing and location of the blazes.
The second fire erupted shortly after the first, around 6 PM, in the Mersinia area, approximately 500 metres away from the initial blaze. Firefighting crews responded promptly to this second fire, managing to bring it under control before it could expand further.
The rapid response to the initial fire was significant, prompting the activation of the "Icarus" protocol, which is designed for large-scale firefighting efforts. This protocol saw the deployment of nine firefighting aircraft, alongside a substantial ground crew comprising 57 personnel from the Forestry Department and 11 fire engines. Additionally, six diggers, two tractors, and a water tanker were utilized to assist in the firefighting efforts.
While the initial fire was successfully contained, the investigation into the causes of both fires remains ongoing. Authorities are working to determine whether the two incidents are indeed linked and to identify any potential suspects.
