**Third Suspect Arrested Over Seizure of Dried Poppy Bulbs**
Famagusta, Cyprus – A 22-year-old man was apprehended on Friday by the drug squad, known as Ykan, as part of an ongoing investigation into the importation of dried poppy bulbs. This arrest follows the discovery of a significant quantity of these bulbs in postal packages within the Famagusta district.
According to a statement released by the police on Saturday, the recent arrest is connected to the seizure of 6.05 kilogrammes of dried poppy bulbs. These items were found concealed in postal parcels, which were subsequently confiscated by Ykan officers operating in the region.
This latest arrest marks the third in connection with this case. Two other suspects, aged 35 and 30, were previously detained on June 25. All three individuals appeared before the Famagusta district court on Friday, where the court ordered that they remain in custody for a period of seven days to facilitate ongoing police investigations.
The Famagusta branch of Ykan is actively continuing its inquiries into the case, seeking to uncover further details regarding the importation and distribution of the dried poppy bulbs.
In a broader context, the recent arrests come amid growing concerns within the Cyprus police regarding the rise of drug-related activities in the region. Authorities have reported record cocaine seizures this year, with more than 75 kilogrammes confiscated, surpassing the total amount seized throughout the entirety of 2022 by 130 percent. Additionally, there has been a notable increase in methamphetamine seizures, alongside the emergence of several new synthetic drugs that have not previously been encountered in such quantities within Cyprus.
Police officials have expressed concern that criminal networks are rapidly adapting their methods and introducing increasingly dangerous substances into the local market.
