A 60-year-old British man has been sentenced to two years and four months in prison for fraudulently claiming welfare benefits while concealing his mother's body in a freezer for nearly three years. Christopher Phillips, from Porthcawl, south Wales, admitted to both preventing a lawful burial and committing fraud by receiving approximately £78,000 ($108,000) in benefits and pension payments after the death of his 89-year-old mother, Sylvia Phillips, in March 2020.
The case came to light when police were alerted to concerns regarding Sylvia Phillips, who had not been seen by medical professionals since September 2022. Officers visited the Phillips home in February 2023, where Christopher initially claimed that his mother was in London with relatives. However, a search of the premises led to the shocking discovery of her body inside a freezer, covered with flowers and a birthday card from her son and his dog.
The cause of Sylvia Phillips' death remains undetermined, as authorities continue their investigation. During the proceedings, it was revealed that Christopher Phillips had expressed to a psychiatrist that he “didn’t want to let her go,” and his legal representatives indicated that he had slept in the same room as the freezer to remain close to her.
Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke, who presided over the case, condemned the actions of Phillips, stating that his mother had "suffered the indignity of being stored in a chest freezer for three years" while he collected funds intended for her care. Detective Chief Inspector Claire Lamerton of South Wales Police described the situation as "extremely sad," emphasizing the emotional and legal ramifications of Phillips' actions.
