**UNIC Medical School to Host Inaugural Lecture Honoring Dr. Nikos Ioannou**
The University of Nicosia (UNIC) Medical School is set to commemorate the legacy of the late Dr. Nikos Ioannou with the inaugural annual scientific lecture on October 5, 2026. The event will take place at 6 PM in Discovery Hall at the university. This lecture series has been established with the backing of the Ioannou family to honor Dr. Ioannou’s substantial contributions to medicine and the advancement of healthcare services in Cyprus.
Dr. Nikos Ioannou, who passed away on June 26, 2025, at the age of 88, was a highly respected orthopaedic surgeon and a pivotal figure in the Cypriot healthcare landscape. His leadership roles included serving as President of the Pancyprian Medical Association and as the inaugural President of the Health Insurance Organisation (HIO). His efforts were instrumental in the development of the General Healthcare System (GeSY), which has had a lasting impact on healthcare delivery in the country.
The lecture will be presented by Professor George N. Ioannou, Dr. Ioannou’s son, who currently serves as the Director of Hepatology at the Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System and is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Washington. Professor Ioannou's talk, titled “The Rise and Fall of Liver Cancer,” will be delivered in English and will explore the evolving landscape of liver cancer incidence and treatment over recent decades. He will also address the significance of prevention and modern therapeutic approaches to the disease.
The establishment of this annual lecture series aims to not only preserve the memory of Dr. Nikos Ioannou but also to foster a platform for scientific discourse on pressing issues in the fields of medicine and healthcare.
